Am I an Alcoholic?

Am I an Alcoholic?

The term "alcoholic" can be a loaded one, and it's not always clear-cut.

However, if you find that your drinking is causing problems in your life, such as affecting your relationships, work, or physical health, then it's worth exploring whether you have a problem with alcohol.

For some people it may be that you have simply noticed that you are drinking a little more than you feel is right for your health and life, perhaps because life is challenging right now.

For others, they may be using alcohol in a self-medicating way due to earlier traumatic experiences, and the resulting emotional and psychological challenges that arise as a result.  It is important to note, that those that have experienced traumatic experiences are much more likely to develop a dependence (or a relationship which could be considered unhealthy) with alcohol  in later life.  This is particularly relevant to those that have experience difficulties during childhood.

It's important to note that alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a considered to be a mental health and/or medical condition, and seeking professional help is a vital step in recovery.

That being said, I will always do my very best to avoid the language associated with addiction, being an "addict", or "having an addictive personality" - I have never found these phrases to be useful, accurate, or even helpful when we consider an individual's specific experiences or life to date.

Am I Dependent On Alcohol?

Am I Dependent on Alcohol?

Dependence on alcohol can manifest in various ways, but some signs may include experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking, drinking more than you intend to, or feeling unable to cut back or stop altogether. If you suspect that you may be dependent on alcohol, it's important to seek professional help and support to manage your symptoms and work towards recovery.

Think about it this way - just for a moment...

If you think that you may be "dependent on alcohol", what would happen if access to alcohol was simply removed.  What would you be left with? Psychologically? Emotionally?  - It may be that you think that this would simply solve all the problems that are you are facing.

However

For many people that are using alcohol in a way that no longer serves them, it is because it provides something like a temporary and immediate relief or release from underlying thoughts, feelings, and emotions that they are unable to contain or process in any other way.   Whilst, I am not condoning the use of alcohol for this reason; I always want my clients to know that there is always a reason why we do the things that we do.

Once we understand that reason, we can do something to change.

Am I drinking too much?

Whether you are drinking too much depends on a variety of factors, such as your age, gender, weight, and overall health.

However, as a general guideline, it's recommended that women have no more than one drink per day, and men have no more than two drinks per day.

If you find that you are regularly exceeding these limits or experiencing negative consequences as a result of your drinking, it's worth exploring whether you may have a problem with alcohol.

It is always worth remembering that alcohol in small quantities effects the depth and quality of our sleep.  Sleep is a huge factor in determining our cognitive ability, ability to manage stress, and regulate our emotional state.   Furthermore, alcohol in small quantities effects the health of our digestive system, particularly our gut health.  It is now known that many of the functions of our immune system and also the production of the chemicals that help to regulate our mood come from the gut.

Can I return to a normal and controlled level of drinking?
For some people, returning to a normal and controlled level of drinking may be possible, but for others, abstinence may be the best option. It's important to note that everyone's journey is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.

We can work together with you to develop a personalized plan that takes into account your individual needs and goals.

During this period of work, it may be worthwhile to consider an initial period of abstinence.  However, if this is not yet achievable for any reason, this does not preclude you from attending therapy.  All that is required that you are not under the influence of alcohol ahead of and during the session.
Can You Have Hypnotherapy to Stop Drinking or Change Patterns/Habits with Alcohol

Yes, hypnotherapy can be an effective tool for helping you to understand and change your relationship with Alcohol.

Hypnotherapy can help you access the subconscious mind, where many of our behaviours and habits are formed. By accessing this part of your mind, I can help you change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours surrounding alcohol and develop healthier coping strategies for the challenges that life will always throw our way.

The use of alcohol is very commonly linked to our wider mental health and it may be necessary or perhaps essential to explore this in order to get the best results for a course of hypnotherapy sessions to help with alcohol consumption.
